The Prodigy Music Video analysis.

Women are objectified in this, to be looked at, the character grabs them
The character goes to a strip club, notion of looking, the point of a strip club is to look. The women are there for a sexual appeal and to become objects.
The character is acting like a man, and being represented as one.

The band comes across as masculine and laddish, extreme, anti-social, violent and unpredictable.

The whole video is shot in point of view, and the mirror at the end gives us an answer.

Intertextuality; 'lads mags' and the bands logo appears on one of the characters bodies.

Hyper-reality- the fact that the character is drunk.

Target audience

We have a wide range of people that would listen to this music and appreciate the video, this gives us a good chance of selling our artists, as many different people would listen to it.

Our final location(s)- Eynsford Castle, Camden Market and The Red Lion

Eynsford Castle:

Eynsford Castle was built in 1085, so its not all fully constructed like it was back when it was first built, but this is exactly what we wanted, we wanted it to reflect the ruins of Sophie and Chris' relationship.
As well as this, in the editing process, we are going to make the scenes of Chris proposing to me in a bright, sunny environment, but when they perform its going to be dark and gloomy.

Camden Market:

For the location of the happy scenes, we wanted something that would reflect the image and mood of the band, and something that would also make it hyper-real, so we decided on Camden, Camden Market attracts thousands each year and is known nationally as the biggest punk/rock market in the country. We thought this was perfect for our music video as it fits in with the 'rock and roll' theme that we want for the band.

 The Red Lion:
The Red Lion is a well known pub in the local area, due to the many gigs that they put on in a small club called 'Leo's'
The pub is known to attract a unique crowd and is a hot spot for many 'metal heads'
We thought this would be perfect for our scenes where I am trying to forget Chris.
This will be where I also have a sort of affair with the lead singer of the band.
We also liked this location because it kept in tie with our theme of 'Sex, Alcohol and Rock and Roll'

Locations.

When we planned our 3 final ideas, they were all to have different locations, but in the end we only really thought of locations for our top two ideas, as when we planned our ideas for Battlescars, we could only think of some rough ideas of what to do.

Halfway Home:

From the beginning, myself and Katie decided that we wanted it to be a very random location as we knew we wanted to tie in the false/broken promise theme. At first we thought of something basic, which was a field with long grass, so that we could interlink the narrative and the performance, all the way through planning, this is all we based it around as we felt it was really important.
But when it came to presenting the ideas, the field did not seem so appealing, we wanted to incorporate hyper-reality in our location, and in a way we have, our final location is Eynsford Castle, it was first constructed in the Norman era, so it is obviously not all intact and fully built, but this is exactly what we wanted, we wanted a representation of the narrative in our location. The ruins of the castle highlighting the ruins of the relationship and how messy the love between the two characters is.

The Show is Over:

This is the one idea that needed serious research, as much as we loved the idea, we could not do it as many of the places were expensive. But when we went to meet up with the band, after we had explained this idea, they told us about a place that they had used before for a photoshoot, and their rate was a very low price of £40 for as many hours as you needed, this was a really good location, it was just what we wanted but we had to think about the costs of us getting down to Chatham, on top of the price of the theatre, and it wasn't gainable for either of us. This is why we chose Halfway Home, as most of the locations are nearby and easy to travel to.

- Sophie and Katie (:

How we are going to cover the important aspects.

1. Genre Characteristics:
( lip synching, stage performance, dance routine, rock band etc):
In the music video, we will have our unsigned artist performing in the grounds of Eynsford Castle, with close ups of the lead singer lip synching and we are going to time the guitar solos as they happen in the original song. The location of the performance interlinks with the narrative.

2. There is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals:
The song contains many lyrics that have given us inspiration for our video, there is two lines that sum up our narrative, lines like 'Can't always keep my Promises' and 'Now I have to go home with this regret' they are important because the lead character, Chris, who is also the guitarist, is making false promises by asking me to marry him, and at the end he realizes he regrets losing me, but the picture proves that he is too late.

3. There is a relationship between music and visuals:
We will be slowing some of it down when it hits the vocal part in the middle, but for the most of our video it will be fast paced, as the guitars and drums are at a very high speed.

4. The need for lots of close ups of the artist and maybe a motif:
We will have a lot of close ups of the lead singer and Chris, so that we can reveal their image and help sell the band, as they are the reason we are making this, if we didn't focus on the lead singer or on other members, the audience would have no idea as to who they are.

5.  The Notion of looking and watching:
In our music video, we have many references to notions of looking, the first one being when I confront Chris about the picture, the camera will focus on it and then it will turn into the video of the night it happened, and how it happened. We are also considering doing a frame within a frame shot, getting my confrontation through many different angles, and one being through the ring and gradually zooming out.

6. Intertextual reference:
When we decided to film it in a castle, we started to think about the feel and mood that we would like for shots. When Chris initially proposes to me, we're going to make it sunny and bright, but then when it comes to shooting the band performing, its going to be dull and dark, our intertextual references are Disney/Fairy-tales for the proposal, and for the performance it is more dark and gothic, the influence being films like Dracula.

7. Hyper- reality:
The theme of hyper-reality runs all the way through our video, starting when she throws the ring away in the middle of the confrontation, after that moment, the ring will be wherever she looks, like on the bar when she is out, on the floor, everywhere. The other aspect of hyper-reality that we have is that when she is drunk, she starts to hallucinate and see Chris. The last hyper- real thing that we have is the location of these scenes, which is The Red Lion in Gravesend (TBC) because its a different location to the other shots, and also links in with the ' rock and roll' theme of our video.

- Sophie and Katie (:

Moodboard

When we made this mood-board, we tried to incorporate all the themes that we are going to have in our music video, so when it comes to watching it, the audience know what to expect and they will be able to understand it better, Rock and Roll is one of the main themes in this as it will give our band an image.

-Sophie and Katie (:

Final Idea- Halfway Home.

After  developing our ideas, we both felt that it didn't sound like a music video, it sounded too much like a story, so we sat down and discussed the ideas with our teacher, we developed it further and started thinking outside the box, considering things like hyper-reality and symbolism, and we finally decided on a final idea that we both love and also, it gave us an image for the band, that we needed desperately, as well as a location.

The whole idea for this is based around Rock and Roll, we'll be filming some of the scenes in Camden in London, which is a predominately rock/punk society, we this this is perfect for some of our scenes. We still have the theme of boy/girl and relationship problems, but we have added so many twists and plots.

Two of the band members will feature in the narrative Chris and Rick, the basic outline of this is that myself (Sophie) and Chris will be together, and we'll be up Camden for the beginning shots, where he will purchase a ring and later proposes to me in Eynsford Castle, this will be the start of his false promises, which is also a theme in this video.
I will then find a picture of him and another girl on his phone and confront him about it, in the confrontation I will throw the ring and walk away, the location will then change back to Camden or a bar in the local area and in my heartache, I will turn to alcohol, the camera will start to intercut with things how I am seeing the world, from here we will make it so that I start seeing the engagement ring everywhere as I still love him, I will also see him standing there, to try and get him out of my head, I will then have a 'lust' scene with the lead singer, I will take a picture on my phone and then Rick will send it to Chris, who will then realize he misses me and loves me, tables will turn and he will start to see the engagement ring everywhere. During the performance he will be wearing it.

The performance side of things will be filmed in a local location, Eynsford Castle, and what we like the most about this is that it is the ruins of a castle, nothing is still in its original form, this makes it perfect as it will highlight the ruins of the relationship featured. We will do solos of each member within the castle somewhere.

Band Meeting- 25th September 2011

Yesterday, myself and Katie traveled to Chatham to meet up with the band, not all of them were there but Rob and Chris ( the guitarists) and Rick ( The lead singer) turned up and we put forward our ideas.

As we explained them, the band were more than happy to contribute, they agreed with our ideas and developed them as much as they could. When we asked them which narrative and song would be best, they decided on Halfway Home, and this is mine and Katie's favourite idea too, they also liked the idea of The Show is Over, but we all agreed this would take a lot of planning and research to make it work to the best of our ability.

So far they love the ideas we have come up with and cannot wait to shoot it, me and Katie have decided that Halfway Home is pretty much definitely our final idea.

You me At Six- Underdog Music Video Analysis

We decided to analyse one of our bands influences, and decided on this one because it is a narrative/performance video, which is what we want for ours too. We were planning on analysing it together, but due to circumstance of living a fair distance away from each other, we decided to split the video into two halves, so that we techincally worked together, and that the load wasn't heavy on both of us. I did up to 1:12 and Katie did from 1:12 onwards.

  • Opens up with the bands drummer, low lighting.
  • As each instrument is introduced, the camera goes to the band member playing it in a slight pan shot.
  • The background lights come on when the vocalist begins to sing, cutting to a close up of him lip synching.
  • Various shots of the band, but focused on the lead singer.
  • Many of the clips slowed down when the song gets faster, an idea of contrast.
  • When the chorus first comes in, we meet our characters in the narrative.
  • Instantly get a feel that there is a sort of a love affair going on bewtween them all, as it cuts between a boy and girl kissing, then to another girl watching and crying.
  • It highlights that the boy involved may be a 'loverat'
  • When the narrative kicks in, you see less of the band and more of the narrative.
  • In the next scene, we see a story begin to unfold about the characters, it follows an almost 'generic' storyline of; boy meets girl ---- boy cheats on girl ---- gets caught ---- heartbroken girl gets revenge ---- he loses them both.
  • We see an argument depicted between girl 1 and the boy, which fits in with the lyrics.
  • We then see more of the band performing and cuts between both girls, highlighting the different moods, the blonde girl is oblivious to whats actually going on, but the brunette girl is heartbroken, this could be a contrast.
  • Chorus starts up again, brunette girl is crying and then walks away.
  •  Master shot of band performing, the singer is the main focus and there is a close up shot of guitar.
  • Pan shot of the band from the back of the stage.
  • Cuts back to the narrative side of the video.
  • Shot of the drummer performing and a fast cut to the narrative (close up on girls face)
  • Cuts back to the drummer, quick cuts as the music speeds up.
  • The narrative shows the girl dancing, the music slows down - The narrative links to the beat of the music aswell as the lyrics.
  • Silouettes of the band performing.
  •  Close up on the drummer performing in slow motion.
  • Cuts to the girl dancing again, and another close up of the guitar.
  • The timing of the cuts gets faster as the beat of the song speeds up, cuts between the singer, band, girl dancing and the girl getting her revenge up until 1:57, another close up on the drummer, zooms out to a long shot.
  • A quick cut,  Shot of the girl and boy kissing, also with the other girl in the shot it then cuts to a reaction shot of the other girl, and then the shot of the blonde girl walking away.
  • Cuts back to the performance side of the music video.
  • Shows the next girl walking away from the boy - Makes narrative clear of the girl getting revenge and how this relates to the lyrics
  • A shot of band from back of stage again - Lights duller.
  • Ends the way it started - Band on stage - Lights fade out.

Inspirations for our music video

When we were discussing ideas for our music video, we thought of many other music videos that influenced us, and helped us come up with our ideas.

Some reflect our narrative, and others the performance.

Genres & Influences

After listening to the band a couple more times, we started to think about what genre they are and who their potential influences are as a band. We thought up a few and then got in contact with the bands guitarist Rob, who agreed with our ideas and mentioned a few more. We then started thinking about genre, and both agreed that they are like pop/rock, we came to this conclusion as their songs have a bouncy feel to it, but have some underlying breakdowns.

Their Influences:

Major League:

City Stereo:

Fall Out Boy:

You me at Six:

All of our influences relate to what we think the band sound like aswell, we felt that this was important as when it came to making the video, we didn't want to make the video slow compared to the song, its also good so that we understand how the band sound and how they want their image to be perceived.

1st Initial Idea- Halfway Home

This is our first initial idea for our music video, when we first listened to it together, we knew that this was our favourite as we instantly came up with 3/4 good ideas.
After listening to it a couple more times, we began to develop what we had thought of and came up with an outline of what we really wanted to do with it.

We decided that it would be a narrative/performance video like the other two, but a very different location for the performance, its a boy/girl lovestory once again, but they are having relationship problems. With this one we picked out a main lyric that runs throughout the song which is 'Can't always keep my promises, but whatever we're going through, i'll just stay me, you just stay you.'   we thought this was a significant line, and this is our main inspiration for our ideas, we have an idea of filming them performing in a field, and cutting between both narrative and performance, in the narrative, filming them pinky promising each other which we would later edit in black and white, and then straight after showing them letting go of each others hands in normal colour as the line is sung, we will also have the lead singer having flashbacks of their relationship, this could well be another member of the band, we havent decided yet.

Near the end of this song that line is repeated a number of times, but is recorded with no instruments, just their voices, when this is played, the video will be cutting between the boy and girl, and the band also. But at the end of the music video we will have the girl leaving the member for somebody else, and him dropping to his knees in sadness.

We have thought hard about this idea, and will be developing this idea further.

Other significant lines in the song, that relate to our ideas:

'I never should of said what I said and now I gotta go home with this regret, only makes sense when we're halfway home'

'Once you cross that line, you should never take it back. It's a lonely road when your all on my back, we've all said some things, some things I hope that we can all forget '

'Once you've dried your eyes then I'll apologise, 'cos I'm done with crying, not done with trying'

- Sophie and Katie x

2nd Initial Idea- The Show is Over

This is our second idea for our music video, we listened through it a couple of times to see what inspirations we got, we couldn't think of anything, so Sophie got in contact with Rob who is the guitarist who then emailed us the lyrics to our chosen tracks.

After reading the lyrics, and listening to the song a couple more times, we can up with a few basic ideas that we could easily develop.
The first thing we thought about was the location, and we decided that it should be on a stage, as it ties in with the title of the song, they would all be in suits/smartwear with spotlights etc on them performing.

The narrative that would accomapny the performance took alot of thought, but we finally came up with a rough outline. which is that there would be a boyfriend and girlfriend, and the girl is continuously cheating on him with someone else and he always stupidly takes her back, we are thinking that one of the members of the band could be the boyfriend, as we decided we wanted pure narrative up until 1:26 and then for the member to come up on stage and join the rest of the band in performing, we would cut between the member and the girl, to emphasis the lyrics into the narration.

For this idea we would have to research into venues with stages and how much it would cost.

Significant lyrics that relate to our ideas: (and our inspiration):

'And now that the show is over and all your lines been played, we got a standing ovation, It was only me that took the stage'

'The show is over (the show is over), the show is over, take a bow'

'But only your imperfection’s shining through tonight. You go on and on that something’s wrong, yet somehow we keep going strong'

- Sophie and Katie x

3rd Initial Idea - Battle Scars

The third song that we considered was Battle Scars also by As Worlds Collide. After listening to the song many times we came up with our most appropriate idea for this song, and this was a performance and narrative video.

We came up with an idea for the narrative side pretty easily after we fully understood the meaning of the song. Our idea for the narrative involved the story line of a boy meeting a girl by chance, getting to know and like her and then her having to leave suddenly. The boy would then have to go to perform at a gig (which would link in with the performance side of the video), and finally towards the end of the video the girl that he had met would turn up at the gig and the video would end with them two together.

The video would start as a performance and the narrative side of them meeting and spending time together would be set in the past as flashbacks but them meeting again at the end would be the present.

Significant lines in the song that relate to our idea (also that gave us inspiration):

'And I'll wait all night
On a shooting star so that maybe she will come back to me, and if this wish I made will just come true I'm gonna do it every night and she wont ever leave.... Don't ever leave'

'To know you'll never leave my side I'd wait all night, I'd wait all night'

A lot of research would have to be done for this idea, into venues and costs.

Introduction to our Unsigned Artist.

When we discussed what we had to do for our coursework this year, we found found out that the artist we would have to use had to be unsigned, and their music copyright free.

Luckily, Sophie is in close contact with a few unsigned bands in the area. After discussing the best route to go down, as we have different music tastes and wanted to choose something that would be appealing to everyone, we decided on As Worlds Collide.

As Worlds Collide formed in 2008, and in 2009 released their debut album Denial in Style, in the same year this was released they toured the UK twice and shared stages with some big american names like Madina Lake.
In 2011 they returned to the studio and recorded their latest EP titled Halfway Home, and have since been promoting it like crazy, by organising tours around the UK for later on this year.

Their latest EP Halfway Home is where we have decided to take our three tracks from, as it is more upbeat and will attract a wider audience.

Members:

Rick Grierson: Lead Vocals
Rob Padfield: Guitar
Chris Horton: Rhythm Guitar and Backing Vocals
Stu Ferguson: Bass and Backing Vocals
Drummer: TBC

From this EP, the songs we have chosen are
Battlescars
The Show is Over
and the title track Halfway Home.

We have been in contact with the guys and they are all up for helping us out, we are trying to arrange a meeting with them so that they can see what we have come up with and also if they have anything to put forward.

Analysis of a conceptual music video

0:04 - The video starts off with a pan of the location - The library
0:12 - Zooms into a close up of a book on the bottom shelf this is significant to the concept of the video as it shows how in everything, you have to start at the very bottom - The fact that it is located on the bottom shelf also relates to the lyrics of the song "I'm just beginning"
0:14 - Close up shot of the front cover of the book which has the singer lip syncing on it - The performance side to the video

1:28 -The book is made to seem even more human like with an over the shoulder shot of it looking up at the ceiling and sky
1:32 - cuts back to performance - The weather/season has changed - This has been done to show time passing
1:50 - Shows the book finally pulling itself up to the very top of the bookshelf - Relates to the lyrics "reaching for something in the distance, so close you can almost taste it"
1:56 - Over the shoulder shot of the book looking down on the world from very high up - Contrast from beginning of the video - The words "Un Voyage Au Fond" are also in the shot
1:58 - Cuts back to performance - Shows the singer lift an umbrella and the weather change around her to rain - Relates to lyrics "Feel the rain on your skin"

2:01 - Shows the book continue to climb in the rain
2:03 - Cuts to performance - Still raining, singer throws umbrella away and also her scarf
2:10 - Shows the book still climbing - Shows a flash of lightening aswell as rain
2:21 - Shows the book wrap its 'arms' around itself - This is done to make the book seem more human and show how it has human emotions  Singer also does this action simultaneously  -  Hints that the book and singer are in the same situation - The book is taking the place of the performer
The environment around both the concept and performance also changes simultaneously
2:31 - Close up of a page from a book with writing on it being burnt
2:42 - Cuts to book and performance - Now both in a different season and environment, Again showing time passing
2:55 - The book is continuing to climb through the snow and cold - Doesn't give up - Links to the concept of the song
2:59 - Shows the book climbing, nearly at the top of the cliff - Has writing on the top right side of the screen
3:04 - A shot of the book pulling itself to the top of the cliff
3:10 - Cuts to a shot of a dove
3:11 - Shows the book falling from the cliff top through the sky
3:17 - The book is falling apart as it falls through the sky - Reflects the concept of life and the journeys people make
3:20 - A shot of pages from the book falling through the sky - The sky has changed and is brighter and clearer

Asking Alexandria Music Video Analysis

I chose this song and video as the song and the visuals link together strongly, the song was written by Danny, the lead vocalist of Asking Alexandria, and it is about his drug and alcohol addiction that he has since overcome, but he wanted to show his fans how bad he genuinely was, bringing him closer to them in the form of a song. He felt like he was fighting a losing battle, and this is shown in the video, all the way through it shows links between them both constantly, most of the time only with timing, but it all still links.

  • The songs opening is a black screen with a pill falling down, giving us an idea of the theme, this is really dramatic and it isnt like a normal opening for a music video, more like a movie.
  • It starts off very quick-paced, quick cuts but using another song by the band off the same album, it shows them on a night out.
  • The intro stops suddenly, with with a title telling us its 30 minutes before what we just saw.
  • A phonecall takes place and an overvoice features, making it apparent that the man we see is in a band, this is where the narrative of the video begins.
  • He gets up and gets ready, in time with the music.
  • It then shows a series of clips, referring to their location, it also tells us this at the beginning of the video.
  • After this it goes on to show us each of the band members in different areas of the city alone/together, the camera shows us that they all recieve the same text message.
  • It then cuts to them having all met up, shows them crossing the road, like a Beatles influence, then slowly walking down the street, revealing what they are wearing, this is the video showing us their image.
  • A canted crane shot is used to introduce the characters as individuals, their is no sound as Ben (the guitarist) is persuading Danny (the lead singer) to have 'just one drink' a shocking font accompanies this in the bottom left hand corner, giving us an incentive that something may go wrong.
  • The next shot we see is of them entering the bar its slow and mainly focused on the guitarist, this could be for the sexual appeal of the band, intended for their audience.
  • After this, we see the introduction of a girl, who is pretty much oozing Femme Fatale, I would say this is one of the most important shots of the narrative as it shows Danny distracted by her attraction. By this point we know something is going to happen.
  • From this is goes into several shots of the band getting intoxicated.
  • The music slows down and as it does, we meet our female character again, slowly walking towards Danny, this is where we really get a good look at her, as she is walking, she is turning heads, and wearing very little clothing.
  • It cuts back to the band, focal point being on Danny, they don't seem impressed, its like they know what will end up happening between Danny and the girl, this relates to the vocalists real life problems aswell.
  • When she reaches him, it becomes apparent that she wants an intimate night with him. He smiles but it cuts to the guitarist who has an expression on his face like 'typical'
  • She spikes his drink, the music becomes fast and in the original song there is a psycotic laugh, which fits in perfectly with the scenes of Danny heavily under the unfluence of drugs, we know she has done this to take advantage.
  • It cuts to her pinning him up against the wall in a sexual nature. The band are in shock.
  • She drags him upstairs, showing him her domination, in time with the music she throws him onto a chair and the intimate relation she wanted, comes true.
  • When the music slows down to a quick, but slow drumbeat we see that the drug she put in his drink has had a bad turn on him.
  • From this point onwards, it is a series of very fast clips, highlighting that Danny is in trouble, and shows she is enjoying putting him htrough suffering.
  • We then see explicit scenes of her choking him and him frothing at the mouth. This proves that the audiences theories of that she wants to cause him harm, are true.
  • This scene cuts between his pain and her gain, dominance is a key theme in the narrative part of this video.
  • We get a quick glimpse of Ben looking for him, but it quickly cuts back to our female character, finished, and we see Danny sitting hopeless, in the chair. As an audience we ask ourselves, 'is he dead?' but we dont quite know.
  • It then cuts to her pleasure, and her almost toying with her victim.
  • She leaves, and as she does, and overvoice of Ben drops in, calling out Danny's name.
  • It then cuts to Ben walking down the corridor, calling out Danny's name, checking every room, he is blatently angry.
  • When he finds him, the anger disappears and his tone suddenly gets worried and anxious, he is pulling and slapping Danny, begging him to wake up, this scene is very emotional for the audience, it also fits in with the emotion in the closing lines of the song.
  • We encounter a dramatic ending, we see one shot of Danny's lifeless hand and the shocking font returns saying ' to be continued' leaving the audience with a cliffhanger, something you rarely see with a music video.

Group Meeting 18/09/11

Today we listened to a lot of our chosen bands songs and decided on three of their songs that we were going to look at in more detail. The three songs we decided on were battle scars, halfway home and the show is over. We chose these songs because we could imagine what the music video would look like for this song easily and as we listened to them we came up with many ideas instantly.
