Group Meeting 27/10/11

Today me and Sophie met to discuss our marketing strategy. We decided on the music channels that our single would be played on and also the radio stations that would be likely to play it. We tried to think of as many different ways to promote our band and single as possible. We also began thinking of some ideas for the design of our website and how we can make the website link in with the band's image.

As Worlds Collide- Marketing Strategy

We have a range a opportunities to sell our band to our audience. Here are our main ideas for our marketing strategy.

  • Our main marketing strategy is our music video. We will advertise our band through our video by showing the video on relevant music channels like Scuzz and Kerrang. Another music channel that we could show our video on is Lava as it is popular for showing unsigned bands.
  • A Website for the band featuring pictures of the band, the single and video, video's of rehearsals, merchandise, links to their facebook page that we will set up and dates of gigs.
  • We are going to sell t-shirts with 'As Worlds Collide' printed on them and a picture of the band.
  • The single will be played on mainstream radio channels such as Kerrang and Radio 1.
  • Posters promoting the band and single in shops and adverts on the itunes website.

    Camera Techniques and Composition

    Throughout this music video the lead singer is lip syncing in different locations and costumes and then all the shots are put together so that it is timed correctly and flows well. To make this work the same shot type has to be used for every lip syncing shot and it must be composed the same. In these shots the singer is always in the centre of the shot and the main focus, this is done using a mid shot. The different shots all put together make the video a lot more interesting to watch rather than if the singer was performing in just one location and in one costume. The shot are cut to the beat of the song and get really fast but still make sense. The amount of locations used could signify him trying to move on as at the beginning we see the narrative of a girl leaving him. This camera technique enhances the music video because it is different and holds the audience' attention.

    In this music video the camera never stops moving and the same scene is repeated continuously four times. The only thing that changes is that there is one more of every person each time around. This use of the camera could be enhancing the ideology behind the video, that the artists' world is not like everyone else's. It is an everyday scene but it shows another take on the world; exciting and unpredictable. It would be a boring scene to watch repeatedly but it is made interesting by the camera techniques and camera movement.

    Group Meeting 06/10/11

    Today we discussed the costumes we want the band to wear in the performance side of the video. We decided that we wanted to make Chris (who is going to be the main character in the narrative) stand out from the rest of the band to stick to the theme of broken promises and betrayal between the two main characters. We tried to make our costume ideas enhance the band's image that we will be trying to create.

    Marketing Case Study - You Me At Six

    We chose to do our marketing case study on You Me At Six who we think come under the same genre as our unsigned band; As Worlds Collide.

    Out of the many marketing methods used in the music industry, we decided that;

    The most desirable;

    Merchandise
    • The release of a single
    • A music video
    • Album and album cover
    • Live performances
    • Website
    • Merchandising
    • Twitter
    The most expensive;
    Release of their latest album
    • Release of a single
    • Music video
    • Album and album cover
    • Live performances
    • Merchandising
    • Website
    • Photos and video clips
    The most lucrative;
    Live Performance dates

    • Release of a single
    • Live Performances
    • Album and album cover
    • Merchandising

    Questions

    1. The institutions that are behind You Me At Six are EMI, Virgin Records, Atlantic, hdm Group, Warner Brothers, Parlophone and prettygooddigital.com. These institutions are relevant to the band because they are promoted by these different companies in different ways.

    2. The band's website allows you to find out tour dates/when albums are released, pre-order tickets/merchandise, go to their online store, view photos of the band and sign-up to receive regular emails about new products and services available that you might like.

    3. The website is used to make the band come across as outlaws/criminals, even though they are from a very middle class, safe area in Surrey. The background is of photocopied Police documents with the band members details on, in the gallery section their is mug-shots of the band. This brings the audience closer to the band and helps builds a whole image for them.

    4. Their audience is international, appealing to a rock/pop-rock audience, this can make them worldly known and appeal to a very wide audience. A lot of people would like them, teenage girls for the bands sexual appeal, and also people in their 20's as that is the age of the band and the audience can relate to their music as they would have been through it and would know how it feels so that they have a connection with the band.

    5. You Me At Six have a very American image. In the pictures on the website of the band members posing as if in a mug-shot they are holding a board with 'LAPD' written on it. This shows that they are trying to appeal to an international audience.

    6. There are many different strategies on the website used to market the band. The link to the band's online store encourages people to buy the their merchandise and the whole image of the website appeals to their target audience. The website also offers you the chance to pre-order their music.

    7. The band's website do this by linking their merchandise store to their website so that their audience/fans can easily access their t-shirts and other merchandise. They also link the sites that sell tickets to their live shows so that you can book them easily without having to go to the box office for them. Another thing that they do is that they allow you to pre-order upcoming albums and tickets before they are released for general sale, ensuring that their dedicated audience is provided with their own copy.

    8. The company's that help provide for the audience are being sold on the website, company's like HMV, Tesco Entertainment, Play.com and itunes. This can improve business for not just the band, but also the music companies as they get a share of the payment and as its all online, it encourages people to go back for other albums as well.

    Image

    We needed an image for our band, one that would suit them and the music they produced, we needed to consider everything we knew about them and also what would suit the music video we was going to make. It took us a long time to think of one, but after developing ideas and coming up with our final idea, we came up with an image for our band members.

    The image we want to give them is represented in the video and runs all the way through, this image is Sex, Alcohol + Rock 'n' Roll.
     We are representing this image in many different ways, with costumes, locations and narrative.

    When it comes to costumes, we will probably have something like this:

    Parkway Drive
     Items of clothing like shirts, ripped jeans/skinny jeans and v-neck shirts will be worn, the three bands featured here are well known artists and are in the same genre/scene  as our unsigned one.

    Because of the theme of our music video being rock and roll etc, we might take some of our image ideas from the bottom band, we like the idea of black and grey colours with ripped jeans, as this would signify the pain and devastation of the relationship.
    We Are the Ocean

    Asking Alexandria
    All of these featured bands are unique in their own way, so
